BEHIND THE PROJECT

Hi, I am Francesca Wiggens

This is the project I created for my Capstone Paper at University. I chose to do a Capstone project which is a large self-initiated design project that is the culmination of my studies in Communication Design. This project allows me to showcase my greatest abilities while also encouraging me to pursue my creative or professional ambitions.

I conceived, planned, and produced my idea during the last semester. It all started with brainstorming about what I wanted to accomplish with this project, as well as a creative intention. I wanted to combine my skills from my Communication Design Major with my Fashion Design Minor. I conceived the idea of sewing a wearable designers toolkit. Young designers may find it stressful to enter the field of the unknown after graduating from university, so I wanted to come up with a concept that would help students ease into the realm of the design world.

I set out to make a project that was both sustainable and made from repurposed materials. I used old jeans that were approaching the end of their cycle. The majority of the jeans were used, therefore there was little waste with the endeavour.

The iconic tartan stripe bag material was chosen because it is so well-known in Aotearoa. A lot of kiwis would have one hidden away in their storage without realising it.

This was project was shot all over Pōneke on a 35mm Film/Digital Camera.
